April Assembly - Beyond Darwin
Our guest speaker, Megan Hochstrasser, Ph.D., is a CRISPR expert and professional science communicator with the Innovative Genomics Institute, and her mission is to bridge the gap between researchers and the public.
We’ve come a long way since Darwin first introduced his rudimentary theory of evolution. Scientists have recently learned how to modify an individual’s genome. CRISPR, an acronym for a description of nucleotides on certain stretches of DNA, is the new earth-shaking genome-editing tool that does this.
March Assembly - Verbal Vagaries
Our guest speaker is Benjamin Bergen, Professor of Cognitive Science at UC San Diego. He’ll discuss research showing that humans are in fact quite resilient in the face of ambiguous language, from homophones (to, two, and too) to headlines (Children’s Stool Good For Use in Garden).
Join our celebration! Assembly also includes a reading, how a member is doing their best, and a moment of reflection. As usual, we'll rejoice by singing along with our band!
Be sure to register in advance. More details coming!
February 2021 - Free Hugs!
Start your Valentine's Day with heart-warming hugs! Before the pandemic, CK Goldiing, an overthinker in need of rehabilitation, was challenged to find 61 strangers to hug. We'll be viewing "61 Hugs," Goldiing's winner of the Best Short Documentary of the Year 2019.
We'll also be singing along with the band on:
- Love Shack - The B52s
- You Can't Hurry Love - The Supremes
- Shower the People - James Taylor
Our celebration also includes a reading, how a member is doing their best, and a moment of reflection. Steve S. will be hosting.
January Assembly - Stepping Up
Have you been told you’re too quiet or meek? Or that you take up too much space, or that you’re a bully?
Come to our January Assembly and learn how to “Stand in your Power: How to be Assertive (Without Being Aggressive).” Learn to show up as your full self and be seen, own your presence with confidence and ease, and match your intention with your impact.
Winter Solstice Party (Online)
We hope you can join us for our Winter Solstice Party on Sunday, December 13, 2020 from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM on Zoom. It will feature...
- A Sharing Showcase, featuring live and pre-recorded songs, readings, and other performances by our attendees
- Holiday singalongs, including photos to review the past year. Please email or message us your photo highlights from the past year!
- A poem marking the end of the year
November Assembly - Renewal
It's our 7th birthday and the perfect excuse for baking yourself a cake to celebrate!
Our guest speakers, Maia and Greg Coladonato, want to fix something that's broken: our tendency to throw things away when they break, leading to overflowing landfills and lost treasures. At Repair Cafe Mountain View, passionate fixers connect with forlorn owners of broken valuables to change the world one part at a time.
We'll be singing:
Thank You for Being a Friend - Andrew Gold
Kind & Generous - Natalie Merchant
Go Your Own Way - Fleetwood Mac
September 2020 Assembly - Bridging Differences
Join us online, Sunday, 9/13 at 11am. Our speaker will be Randy Lioz from Braver Angels. Randy has made it his life’s work to depolarize conversations we have surrounding politics. Too often we demonize and dehumanize those we don’t agree with about politics, but what if we emphasize curiosity, and even building relationships? Can we actually be more effective advocates for our deeply held beliefs if we hold off on expressing them? Let’s find out!
We will meet on Zoom and have breakout room mingling at 10:30 am, assembly at 11:00 am, and more mingling at noon.
August Assembly - Greater Community
Community is why we come together at Sunday Assembly. We hope you can join us, Sunday, August 9th for inspiring speakers and fun singalongs.
Our guest speaker, Chuck Blair, will talk with us about the Oasis community which, like Sunday Assembly, is both secular and inclusive. Chuck will share with us Oasis' core values and how they practice them. Please see the Oasis website and Facebook group.
